Asier Albizu, director-general: "Biolan Microbiosensores Thank CDTI Innovation we are developing innovative technology to improve the quality of life in society ”
BIOLAN Microbiosensores is developing a digital platform that allows remote monitoring of various physical and physiological parameters associated with human fragility

BIOLANas a company in 2006, after years of research in the area of oenology and systems. As biosensóricos Asier Albizu, director-general: “ Initially, the company was born to introduce a new technology in the world of diagnosis. Experience enabled, by 2015, decided to launch a new division focused on Areas of health to develop, initially, devices for laboratory tests required in pharmacological treatments ”.
“ the objective of this innovative project is to develop a technological solution digitalised through tele-assistance to facilitate the diagnosis and monitoring of the fragility in various vulnerable populations ”, ensures Albizu.

In Spain, the fragility affects 18 per cent of all persons over 65 years and reached 45 per cent in those who require care. This is closely linked to the increase in life expectancy and presents significant challenges to the health system and for society at large.
“ today, there is a standardized tool that allows the identification and monitoring of the fragility associated with ageing quickly and easily, in practice routine care. As a solution to this problem, we initiated the development of this project with the aim of improving the quality of life of people, helping to delay the unit of this population. Prototypes that we have developed, in addition, offer lower the cost of medical care and for use in other vulnerable groups ”.
The platform that is developing BIOLAN helps to diagnose and manage the data and consists of three devices. On the one hand, the Sitting, an innovative instrument that, through digitized sensors, determines the functional status of a person. According to the director-general, “ This device, based on a patent instituteInvestigación Sanitaria Biogipuzkoait is a chair with pressure sensors that, depending on how you feel and the adjournment of the person to diagnose, determines an adequate standard of fragility ”.
Furthermore, the Device or bracelet Smart-band digitalized intelligent way to monitor, in remote, physiological parameters associated with the fragility. “ In this regard, we have developed a code for the data obtained are not externalicen to other companies and that we can only use us. In Addition, we have also developed a lateral flow that detect two biological markers of fragility, line of work also learned of a patent of the institute of Health Research Biogipuzkoa ”.

“ with all this, integrate data from different devices and get complete information, and combined to help the diagnosis, prevention and management of the fragility ”, which ensures Albizu adds: “ we are very grateful to the aid granted to us by the CDTI innovation through funds MRR, will enable us to position ourselves in a highly competitive and innovative as is the health and ensure that technological innovation is available to people, in our case, of those most vulnerable sectors of society in order to improve the quality of life and contribute to the active and healthy ageing of the population ”.
Joint collaboration
This project is under the joint invitation ISCIII-CDTI 2023 envisaged within the LOSS of health of Vanguard financed by the mechanism for the recovery and resilience. In its development are also collaborating onTekniker Technological Centreresponsible for design and develop the software and electronic platform embedded data acquisition device and granted the Smart-band, and the institute for Health Research Biogipuzkoa, reference centre at the national and international levels.
“ in this project, we, as a company, we contribute with our experience in the development of diagnostic tools digitized and the institute of Health Research Biogipuzkoa, for its part, provides its extensive background in the field of research on ageing, ” says the director-general of the company.
Screening of the company
Among the priorities of BIOLAN, which has been awarded in 2024 with the national innovation Prize awarded by the ministry of Science, innovation and universities, stresses the continued conquering new markets in the coming five years: “ we are trying to introduce in other countries already products marketed in spain, with the CE marking, managing in each of them to obtain the licence of the drug Agencial thereof ”, ensures Albizu.
