The CDTI Innovation awarded the contract of r & D for the first spanish project of mission orbit of quantum distribution key

  • The executors of the project, whose total budget is eur 125 million funded from the recovery Mechanism and resilience, Thales Alenia Space Spain for the Geo and Sener QKD aerospace and Iberian Telespazio for batch QKD LEO.
  • Each batch is in two stages, a competitive first for the design of the solution for each submisión and a second for development, construction, testing of verification and validation of prototypes.
  • This horizontal project between the ministry of economic and Digital Processing and the ministry of science, innovation and universities, which is funded by the 15 of the component PRTR SETELECO and implements the performance 8 Aerospace L, in coordination with the commissioner of Aerospace L and/or Spanish space agency.

The initiative of the Public Procurement system of Innovation, "QKD Quantum Key Distribution", is aligned with the performance of Aerospace L 8

The governing council of the centre for technological development and innovation (CDTI), an agency of the ministry of Science, innovation and universities and manager of the instrument of pre-commercial public purchasing, has adopted the procurement of services of r & D for the development of two prototypes of satellite payload and ground segment partner for quantum distribution keys (QKD, quantum key distribution) companies Thales Alenia Space Spain S.A. for the lot 1 (GEO) and Aerospace Sener S.A. and iberian Telespazio S.L.U. for batch 2 (LEO).

Given that the market there are no technological solutions that will respond to technological challenge implies and considering the need to create new knowledge through innovative r & D, the project is managed through the instrument of pre-commercial public purchase the CDTI for moving from one level of technological maturity of TRL-3/4 a TRL-8. The CDTI instrument of Pre-Commercial Public Purchase articulates horizontal collaboration between the ministry of Science, innovation and universities to implement the action 8 (satellite and terrestrial communication quantum) LOSS of Aerospace and the state secretariat for telecommunications and Digital Infrastructure (SETELECO) of the ministry of economic and Digital Transformation, responsible for the component 15 of the Recovery Plan, Transformation and Resilience.

This project represents the first mission orbit spanish quantum keys, a disruptive technology beyond the current models of optical communications to provide a completely new paradigm in the area of security of information and communication technologies based on the quantum properties of photons and, in the future, will serve both in the context of communications and for civilian users, corporate and commercial management of infrastructure, services and applications which have an impact on the environment, security or finance, among other areas.

The duration of the project will be 24 months, with a design phase of the solution of r & D of up to 4 months and a second phase of development, construction, verification and validation of prototypes of up to 20 months.

Profile of the technological challenge

In particular, the project will require both the development of new elements technological and adaptation to the space environment of technologies as sources of photons, quantum generators of random numbers telescopes for optical communications compatible with the transmission of quantum states and processors for key distilled received by the quantum channel, among others, as well as the development of a new ground segment or management centre and processed with the potential to integrate into the future european network Euro-QCI (European Quantum Communications Infrastructure) for technological leapfrogging. This will, for example, cover shipping over longer distances, as the degradation of signals in space is less than through terrestrial systems fiber and geostationary altitude satellites makes communications between continents complete with a single satellite, continuously and without the need to keep track of the signal.

The tender for the mission, with a total budget of eur 125 million, is divided into two or automated spam submissions:

  • QKD GEO, with a strength of up to eur 105 million, for the development of a payload destined to be engaged in a geostationary 35,786 km above sea level and its associated ground segment.
  • QKD LEO, with a strength of up to 20 million euros, for the development of a payload destined to be engaged in a satellite earth orbit and its associated ground segment.
