Pulmonary Simulation

The initiative of the Public Purchase Innovation Pulmonary simulation refers to pre-commercial procurement of services of r & D in the area of personalized medicine of precision, lung and sustainability of the national health system (NHS).

This potential PPI would be covered and aligned with the "PERTE" (Strategic projects for economic recovery and transformation) Health of Vanguard and, in particular, within the action called "Incorporation of techniques and technologies in the national health system"

There is a need in the NHS (National Health System) to obtain a technology that allows early diagnosis and personalized precision treatment of lung diseases, for the effective treatment of patients and the sustainability of the NHS in this area, both from the economic point of view and in terms of social inclusiveness.

This initiative, which is currently in the feasibility assessment phase, provides novelty and innovation in the use of medical imaging and biological signals through artificial intelligence.

Need raised by a Public Administration

Diffuse interstitial lung diseases (DIDDs) encompass more than 100 rare respiratory diseases affecting the lung parenchyma, with a variable inflammatory and fibrotic component. As minority diseases, each DIDD affects few subjects, but analyzing all the DIDDs the prevalence is 218.9 per 100,000 inhabitants, and the incidence is incremental due to the increase in life expectancy, environmental pollution and post-viral changes such as those occurring in the post-covid phase, being currently the first cause of lung transplantation in Spain. Currently, there are no predictive factors for the evolution of the disease at the time of diagnosis or its behavior depending on the treatment.

A medical software aimed at developing a predictive evolutionary simulation system for interstitial lung using artificial intelligence will allow modeling how the patient's lung will evolve over time, taking into account the images and the type of EPIDs at the time of diagnosis, as well as validated prognostic factors.

This innovative program will be of interest to the National Health System, as a tool for the optimization of health care costs associated with the evolutionary control and treatment of IDPDs.

The technological challenge raised

The main objective of the activity is to develop the necessary technology to create a prototype software program focused on the creation of intelligent algorithms for the detection of critical elements, both for diagnosis and for the development of a predictive model of the evolution of the EPIDs. In this sense, the fusion of the information detected, identified and classified from chest HRCT images, together with other types of information (functional, clinical data, etc. of the patients), will contextualize and improve the prognostic and therapeutic approach to this type of diseases.
