IVANA ASCASO, manager of laboratories Argenol: “ The aid received CDTI of Innovation and the FEDER allow us to continue to investigate in a highly competitive industry ”
In 1939, Antonio de Gregorio Rocasolano, josé Lostao Camón and jesus, scientists from different areas, created the company Argenol Laboratories with the idea of producing small particles of silver as active ingredients for medicines. Today, this sme has become one of the leaders in their sector, for their innovative products
For more than 2000 years is well known the use of la plata for their many applications disinfectants and antibacterial. The greek and roman civilizations used silver containers for preserving its food and already in the 19th century was used this metal as active ingredient of some drugs.
Headquarters Argenol Laboratories
For Ivana Ascaso – managingArgenol laboratories– since its inception, the innovative spirit form part of the dna of this company: “ in fact, the company was created from a thesis of jesus Camón that, at the time, manufactured small particles called colloids silver and build on their antimicrobicidal properties, were used as active ingredient for use in medicine and treatment of infections. Subsequently, with the course of the years, we have diversified our products used as feedstock this metal and other precious materials for use in surgical treatments, dermatology, cosmetics, etc. ”.
“ we must not forget that numerous studies have shown the particles antimicrobials silver front impact a wide spectrum of bacteria and, in addition, they also create some sort of antiviral and antifungal. This makes derivatives of la plata are of particular interest to other industries such as textiles, in the preparation of technical material or sports clothes and laboratory ”.
Reactors in plant pharmaceutical active principles
“ This concern be more innovative and get new products with higher benefits have enabled us to obtain solutions that are being traded in the health sector, the cosmetics industry, ceramics, and also for water purification, ranking in a position of leadership at the international level ”.
“ our mission is to create additives that maximize the success of our customers' assets through differing, high-value-added. In the field of the pharmaceutical industry, we also manufacture assets derived from principles tannic Acid, such as tanato albumin, which are used in drugs or medicinal products for its astringent properties. Moreover, within two years we hope to get new products based on iron salts with properties for the treatment of anaemia.
Support of CDTI Innovation
In 2017Argenol laboratoriesstarted with the help ofCDTI Innovationand the FEDER, an r & D to obtain an antibacterial formula with silver particles for use in cleaning products for hospitals: “ without a doubt, explains Ivana Ascaso, this project presented a product on the market very useful for the disinfection of sensitive facilities to the bacterial contamination, such as hospitals, homes for elderly and school canteens. La plata, in metallic, combined or ion, acts as a powerful agent bactericide in these areas and facilities. The application can be directly with a detergent or cleaner, but also, through a proprietary technology introduced silver particles in paints and coatings, ceramics, contributing to the surface antimicrobicidal properties and avoiding pollution or bacteria proliferation ”.
By its antibacterial properties, with the advent of the COVID-19, goods produced in laboratories Argenol, aimed at industrial applications, saw a significant increase in their sales: “ As an example, at the time, the National Currency Factory and Bell contacted us to test our additives and thus avoid possible contagions but the project was paralysed ".
In 2023 the company began to develop a new project with the financial support of theCDTIand the FEDER, whose aim is to investigate, develop and validate synthesis processes three active ingredients based on iron, two for the treatment of anaemia and the third for the treatment of hiperfosfatemia.
“ according to who, anaemia affects one third of the world's population. It is hoped that the coming years will increase the demand for credit for this affliction and also the hiperfosfatemia. For this reason, that we began last year we aim at increasing the portfolio of pharmaceutical products offered by the company and settle as a provider of european reference. ”
“ certainly, both the aid received the CDTI Innovation and the erdf funds have been crucial for us. This allows us to continue to investigate in an increasingly competitive ”.

Main sectors
With a turnover in excess of 7.5 million euros annually, of which 85 per cent comes from the products destined for the health sector, its main clients are pharmaceutical manufacturers and distributors, mostly from europe, United States, India, morocco and Central America. But we must not forget the increase of their sales in the manufacturing and cosmetics: “ There are increasing trend in the field of cosmetic due to avoid the use of parabens and other chemical compounds. In this regard, this sector using our active ingredients based in silver, gold and platinum as an alternative to parabens, building on its preserving properties, as is the case of la plata, or provide antioxidant properties as gold and platinum. Recently, we have achieved the COSMOS and certified ECOCERT indicating that our products manufactured to cosmetic applications are made with natural raw material ”.
