Luis Rodríguez Llopis, president of IDOM: “ Collaboration with the CDTI Innovation has helped to strengthen our position in the field of merger and also to promote our technological development "
The multinational IDOM constitutes one of the most innovative companies in the area of industry of science. Over the last few years has obtained contracts are very relevant in both the ITER Fusion and for Energy (F4E), the organization of the european Union responsible for the contribution of europe to the ITER project, and also participates as a leader in other projects of major importance, as the EC Upper Launchers
A few months ago,F4EawardedIDOMthe design of bolómetros to install from the jar and of the rotaryITER. The bolómetros are precision instruments that provide information on each millisecond, heat losses in the plasma in the form of electromagnetic radiation, which is key in the energy balance of the new tokamak and for the control of the system of blood.
This project falls within a framework contract - around 20 million to that awarded F4E IDOM 2021 for ITER and diagnoses which began with the design of the Core Plasma Thomson Scattering (CPTS), one of the crown jewels in instrumentation of tokamaks measuring density and plasma temperature, critical benchmarks in the production of blood and generation of fusion reactions. Recently, IDOM has completed preliminary design of this diagnosis, which has been revised formally by experts, F4E ITER and the institute of Quantum Science and technology of japan (QST-JADA), among others.
With this contract, estimated at approximately eur 20 million for the development of a diagnosis of ITER, what are the main technological challenges facing?
The development of tools at the heart of a fusion reactor is fraught with challenges physical, technical and industrial change. It Is a very hostile physically environment that leads to limit the materials, ideas, everything. To make new contributions to the ITER project, considered the largest scientific experiment of the world and who is seeking safe, affordable and almost inexhaustible, is a real challenge in science and technology for our company.
IDOM has positioned itself in recent years in the field of merger, being a company leader in many of the technologies of high added value of the ITER project: diagnostics, blankets, heating systems. What are the keys to the success of this company?
It is a question that we do so often. The key to our work is the ability to develop innovative solutions and necessarily, at the same time, robust and efficient. The commitment to the client, the importance of persons and the requirement in the professional development are three values that remain unchanged since the founding of IDOM, in 1957, and today, more than ever, guide our record of the future.
Participate in this experimental reactor demands of the best technical references and technological challenges face impressive. It is also an excellent showcase for access to other sectors. How participation in this scientific experiment on a large scale has benefited as a company?
Indeed, the type of skills which takes place for these projects is implementation in other areas, especially in scientific projects, astronomy and space, Optical systems, etc. Since IDOM promotes the development of energy harvesting, as well as testing infrastructure necessary to move towards its marketing in the near future. Therefore, the contracts for the design of ITER diagnoses reinforce our position in the field of merger and other related.
Fusion energy is one of the most promising as a source of energy, sustainable and ecology and easily accessible to any country in the future. In this connection, what new projects are planning to participate in the medium term?
Although the control of nuclear fusion for energy production has been elusive for the past seventy years, our participation in the last projects in the pursuit of this ‘ holy grail ’, in particular through the ITER and F4E, have made us see that the objective is the scope of a generation. In this regard, it is important to stress that we are also working with other fusion reactors and facilities related to scientific this area: the Reactor Jules Horowitz (JHR) in france, MAST Upgrade and STEP in The United Kingdom, European Spallation Source in Sweden, Moltex in Canada, etc. and we hope to continue along this path in the coming years.
From a business perspective, how to participate in this project has contributed to the internationalization of IDOM?
Our international practice in science and technology is prior to the projects for ITER, but it is true that the draft F4E we have had the opportunity to engage and collaborate closely with laboratories, institutions and enterprises in many countries. It Is an experience that it is for me at all its aspects: scientific, technical, commercial, business and cultural.
Fusion energy attracts numerous private investors who bet on developments, beyond the ITER project, which pose a much higher risk and much more accelerated schedule. In this ecosystem are emerging many private initiatives at european level. How is positioning himself IDOM in this context?
A very direct way,IDOMparticipates as founding partner in Gauss Fusion, together with other companies based in four european countries: germany, france, italy and spain, with a mandate to lead the merger to commercial exploitation within twenty years. Our aim is to continue to cooperate in these fascinating projects and, at the same time, support new initiatives as Gauss Fusion that have the potential to accelerate the development of fusion energy clean in close partnership público-privada (DPI). I would also stress that the participation of private industry in ITER has created a potential of knowledge and skills that must be continued in order to achieve a clean and safe energy, as well as to resolve the problems facing the planet. We are very proud and excited to join this initiative, and i would like to express our appreciation to the ITER project, as a perpetrator and tractor this new trend.
As a focal point with the spanish industry on nuclear fusion,CDTI Innovationhas the mission to maximize the return of technology and industrial property derived from the spanish contribution to the great Scientific Facilities and promote the contracts carried out in these infrastructures by the domestic industry are very important and possible technical excellence. What i would highlight of this collaboration?
Collaboration with theCDTI Innovationhad helped to strengthen our position in the field of merger and also to promote our technological development. In this regard, the great Scientific Facilities have played an instrumental role in our ability to innovate and move forward because they enable us to be at the forefront of science and technology. IDOM will continue in the same path to address new challenges and jointly explore different Research areas.
